The Committee for Integrity Enhancement 22th Awards Ceremony was held April 21, 2014, at Northside Middle School Auditorium.  The keynote speaker for the Ceremony was editorial cartoonist Gary Varvel. Gary’s message for the evening began: “Humor is not always the goal of the cartoonist, presenting the topic with fact and truth is.”  He displayed some of his more prominent cartoons for the young audience, teachers and parents to understand the integrity in each one. He expressed his opinion by drawing the event as a cartoon, for example, the World Trade Center tragedy, the success of capturing Bin Laden, Suddam Hussein, an eye for an eye.  He mentioned Teddy Roosevelt as saying we can afford to differ on many things, with the exception of honesty. Mr. Varvel’s main focus on closing was that to be successful, you must keep trying, DON’T QUIT, have confidence and passion for what you do and have “Fire in Your Belly” for your career of choice, whatever that may be.

The topic for the 2014 student essay contest this year was “How Can I Show Integrity in the Way I Express My Opinions?”  887 essays were received from Delaware County elementary, middle, high school and home schools. Essays were coded prior to being given to the judges and students’ names were omitted. After the judges selected the winning essays, the Committee members awarded the overall winners for First, Second and Third in each division, from the two finalist from each school. Only then were the codes matched and the names of the students revealed.

Each participating school had two winners in each division. All participants received a certificate of participation. The top two students in their respective division received $20. The overall winners in each division received a plaque and a 1st Place prize of $150, 2nd place prize of $100 and a 3rd place prize of $75.

In addition to the essay contest, the Committee awards Personal Integrity and Teacher Appreciation Awards.

The Committee for Integrity Enhancement is made of local citizens working together to promote and recognize “integrity” in the lives of area residents of all ages in the Muncie/Delaware County area.  Follow CIE on their Facebook Page.
